We had an interesting discussion at work tonight. It started with the contemplation of picking up a couple powerball tickets to play.
I’ve never actually played that kind of lottery – and only recently played some scratch tickets for the first time. But I have to admit its damned tempting!
The topic eventually and rather quickly turned to “what would you do with the winnings” ? And I asked each person what would be the top 5 things in order that they would do…
My answers:
1. Pay off all debt.
2. Pay for gastric surgery/and any follow up cosmetic surgeries until all vestiges of weight issues had vanished.
3. Set aside 6 million each for my Mother, Father, Best Friend for use at their discretion.
4. Open a chain of High Quality tattoo shops through New England, hiring only the best talent out there. And recruiting where needed. With the hopes to expand nationally at some point.
5. Buy a home locally, Condo in Boston/NYC/New Orleans/San Francisco/and various time shares throughout the globe. (That might become just nice hotel room lol)
So thats my Top 5. There are other things of course that I would want to do – travel, invest for the future, etc… But those are the top 5 first on the list.
Oh and there is one that goes without saying… Early Retirement! lol
What would you do with 165 million?
As for the rest of the day it was very calm and collected. It’s been a while since I have seen a day so truly blissful and quiet at work lol. They also bought us dinner from a local wings joint that is just fantastic. I finally tried honey mustard wings and OMG! A new temptation is entered into the books… sigh… lol
And now I’m off for a bit of food then a bit of Modern Warfare.

I have known for years what I would do if I won a big lottery jackpot. I only buy a lottery ticket when it gets really big like over $100 million, and even then I often forget or don’t hear about it. I only wish there was a way to buy the ticket online since I never actually go into a gas station (pay at the pump).
Anyway, if I won $165 million I would of course immediately quit my job. Actually first I would probably call in sick for a week or so while I get myself in order. The first and most important thing you need to do when you suddenly come into this much money is get an attorney. That could be tricky because you certainly need someone you can trust. I also would need a financial advisor but plan to make my full time job managing the money so I can live off of my investments so the financial advisor would just help me get the ball rolling. You would be surprised how quickly $165 million will go if you don’t pay attention. It really isn’t that much money. I wouldn’t want to claim the prize until I had arranged the financial plan to intake that much money. Off the top of my head I would probably put 50% of the after tax cash prize into extremely secure income generating investments so that the original balance is protected. I would want a return of at least 5% from that investment so I would have an immediate annual income of $1 million a year to live off of for the rest of my life. The rest of the money I would spend or give away.
Next I would hire 3 people to be on my full time staff: 1) a personal trainer who would work me out everyday so I can have a hot body. We would need a private gym and until I buy a mansion we might have to rent and furnish my own gym. 2) a personal stylist – ideally this person would not only do my hair but also my nails and ideally help dress me by doing some of my wardrobe shopping for me. 3) a personal assistant – this person would need to be very trusted by me because they have the hardest job to ensure I don’t end up dead or in rehab. I also want them to help me watch the accountant, attorney and other people handling my affairs. I’m a big control freak to start but with that much money and everything I would want to do with it I wouldn’t be able to be everywhere at once. I could see the personal assistant role growing into a business manager role if I trusted the person enough.
Next I would shop for stuff of course! The very first day I get the money I would probably go buy a Range Rover off the lot. I would also want to order a Mercedes CL65 (drool). We would need to decide what we wanted to do about living situation…I’m inclined to buy a huge house here but could see buying property in other cities. I would also probably charter a plane and fly a bunch of my friends somewhere fun like Mardi Gras in Sydney or Ibiza, whatever. I would definitely want to travel more. And buy lots of cutting edge technology of course! Beyond that I would probably try investing some money in small up and coming businesses and give some money to charities and family.
Dude! You’ve put some serious thought into that! Thats fantastic.. and maybe one of us will win it someday and can put our plans into action!
